Harald and Shirley Pager’s contribution to the field of Drakensberg San Rock Art

Harald and Shirley-Ann Pager, in the 1960s, painstakingly redrew and described all the San Rock Art in the Didima Valley and on its periphery in the Central Drakensberg. These efforts included some 17 shelters and approximately 3,900 frescos. An invaluable effort, as weathering constantly destroys San rock art.

These efforts culminated in a detailed 1971 publication, ‘Ndedema: a documentation of the rock paintings of the Ndedema Gorge’. The African Rock Art Digital Archive houses the Pager Collection.
